AURORA

Sunday i was the first anniversary of the  Norwegian massacres in which 77 were killed. The lone perpetrator was protesting the heavy influx of Muslims into Norway. He had planned well and included a diversion killing in Oslo before taking a boat to the island.

That killer had a “cause” and a plan which he had developed over a period of time.

Friday night’s Aurora movie horror was also well planned and carried out meticulously. Fortunately his planned diversion never took place and his apartment did not explode.

We do not know what was his “cause”; but he too was protesting against society.

Certainly  neither  incidents were acts  of sanity, but were they actions of insanity as defined as a psychosis or just extreme  examples of pathological anti-social behavior?  In any case there is insanity manifested by these individuals removing themselves from an sense  of criminal or civic responsibility.

These actions occur frequently in various parts of the world. Few are on such a massive state but with the availability of mass communications of news I would surmise that there is at least one a year that is not terrorist inspire.

It is impossible to prevent every one. If someone notices signs suggesting the planning of such a act the authorities should be warned.

Should we ban the sale of “guns”? I do not believe so; but we  must make the sale of all automatic and assault weapons  illegal

A licensed hand gun for self protection and limited shot hunting weapons should be permitted. The laws should be Federal if they do not conflict with the Constitution.

We can not prevent these mass killings but we can make it more difficult to happen.

With the NCAA sanctions on Penn State to be announced about 9AM I may post again early afternoon.

  1. I agree with you, Doc. I grew up in a house with rifles and shotguns. We hunted and ate the meat. No one would think of wanting an automatic firearms or a pistol. I also think that the number of rounds one can buy should be limited. Have 10,000 rounds sounds crazy. You don't need that for self protection or hunting. People should be allowed to own guns, but within limits. That does not go against the second amendment which was created for a different time and place.

  2. If someone is intent on mayhem and murder , guns are not necessary to carry this out. Look at Oklahoma City or the Japan subway attack or even the world trade center attack, where they took over the planes with box cutters!
More gun laws or bans are not the answer, we need to weed out and keep track of the fringe whackos in our society! There are always warning signs as with the Major in Texas, that go unheeded!
Notice how both Presidential candidates are silent on the whole gun issue?

  3. Doc, I must disagree with you on this one. The Aurora Colorado Killer James Holmes was a TERRORIST plan and simple. He did recon on the location, conducted advanced planning, methodically ordered his weapons, and carried out his plan, period. His was an act of terror against American Society. Insanity had NOTHING to do with his actions. He used his intellect for terror. Let's not sugar-coat what he did.

  4. 13 people died in a truck accident in TX today. They were probably illegal immigrants. More deaths than Aurora. This too was a tragic event, but flags will not be ordered at half staff for them. $60 million to the NCAA will not help the victims. Not even sure of the purpose of such an outrageous amount. Movie theater crazy is making headlines and the talk of the town, exactly what he wanted. Not a terrorist just very mentally ill, like the Sandusky coverup, hope people didn't ignore signs or cries for help.

  5. Siddeeq, there is a question on the definition of terrorist. I prefer it to mean one of an organized group dedicated to attacking a specific community to gain a definitive end. Holmes acted to vent for an unknown reason his own fury on society and the innocent.

Anon 3:42PM The five that died in New York in an accident Sunday night is also a tragic event but these are accidents as was the reacdent capsizing of a third world ferry with a large loss of life. Those are accidents not deliberate acts of violence by an individual designed to kill.

  6. Doc, A Terrorist can be a solo actor, not affiliated with any group. His/her acts create FEAR. See Wikipedia below.

Terrorism: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    (Redirected from Terrorist)
"Terrorist" redirects here. For other uses, see Terrorist (disambiguation).

Terrorism is the systematic use of terror, especially as a means of coercion. In the international community, however, terrorism has no universally agreed, legally binding, criminal law definition.[1][2] Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for a religious, political or, ideological goal; and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (civilians).

  8. Siddeeq, Wikipedia's definition is ambiguous enough that both our interpretations can be right. I believe that this is a philosophical issue that can only be adjudicated when and if we learn his motives. Was it to create terror or make certain his 15 minutes?
