Muhlenberg 6/6/08

Thursday's night's public hearing on the Muhlenberg CN was again held before a full house. The attendees were as enthusiastic but not as vociferous as those at the first hearing.

Assemblyman Green opened the meeting with a rambling CMA discourse explaining his relationship with Solaris, what he had done in the past regarding closing MRMC and `most important, what he and the legislature plan for the future. I gathered that he has proposed legislation that will offer monetary relief to essential hospitals that have financial difficulties resulting from uninsured care.

He was followed by the mayors and political leaders of the surrounding communities who re-emphasized the unique position Muhlenberg holds in the area. They all pointed out the negative outcomes that must result from the excessive transit times to the areas surviving hospitals as well as other negative logistic factors that will result.

There was repeated reference to the Solaris/Green obstetrical solution's impracticality resulting in a minimum of over 30 minutes transit time under probably unattainable traffic conditions .

Olive Lynch and David Schwartz gave very impressive presentations as did Councilwoman Candidate Annie McWilliams.

My opinion is that there will be no precipitous action in granting the CN. The fact that this time seven members of the hearing committee were present is a positive sign. I also believe that Muhlenberg represents a ticking political bomb that did not exist in the earlier hospital closings.
