ELECTION RESULTS

"Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people" A. Lincoln.

Plainfielders and especially those of the 3rd Ward should hold their heads high after yesterday's elections. They have demonstrated that they are not sheep who unfaltering follow their party leader. Instead of, to paraphrase Decatur, "My Party right or wrong, it is my Party" the majority has demanded independence in city government. The Council in 2009 will be split 3 1/2 to 3 1/2 thus action will be thoughtful and not rubber stamp. The Council meetings should become important again.

I can only hope, that the "New Democrats" do not fall into the trap of believing that they can forge a new omnipotent political machine and forget that their success was due to a public rejection of boss politics. This unfortunately has happened several; times in the last two decades.

  1. Sir, you must have been the one asleep at the proverbial wheel.

The New Dems did have a 7-0 majority on the Council at one point. And what did they do? Raise taxes. And nothing else. Crime was at an all time high. No redevelopment. No community input. No pay-to-play legislation. No council meetings on TV.

That is why they lost so badly in 2005. We are not talking about ancient news here.

But you would never know that from the comments of the needler.

Unless of course, you ware awake.
