OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

The Carmague is an nature protected area similar to the Virginia-Carolina Dismal Swamp. It is a fresh water marsh in its northern portion and in the south along the sea coast it is of course a salt water marsh area and extends about 50 or more miles west of the Rhone estuary. Arles lies just north of the marsh's boundries, the area was a very rich farming land and settled long before the Roman's occupied Gaul.

It is full of wild life and many species of birds. Most famous are the Carmague wild horses which are white. There are also herds of wild cattle that roam the marshes.

Nowadays motor vehicles are bared from the area, there are trails and canals which can be traveled.

The three photos give an idea of the marsh lands, in the second one there are cattle in the background, and in the last you can see them drinking in the center.
Unfortunately the only picture I have of Camargue Horse is one in a pen in the exhibit area.
