RESPECT A TWO WAY STREET

I occasionally excerpt a comment from my blog to be a point of discussion. This is the first time I have taken a comment from an other's blog; Bernice's Plaintalker II of 3/13/12.

Mar 13, 2012 06:01 AM Oh Rebecca PLEASE! You were out of line as much as the Mayor! It's obvious NONE of you respect the Mayor but you MUST respect the position! The public spoke about the behavior of you all! And for ONCE Bridget Rivers made the most sense out of all of you! You are ALL a disgrace to this town, with your personal agendas, vendettas and nasty attitudes! Come on November so we can VOTE and make our voices heard!!

The writer makes a false assumption in that it is the position that MUST be respected. The Position should be honored and protected, but it is an object and does not merit reverence. It is the person filling the position that must earn the respect that the office merits.

Unfortunately our Mayor has done little to receive except form those who have benefited from her management style the esteem that the office should receive. Additionally the individual in the office can not expect generalized respect by continuing to dramatically disrespect others who may have contrary views. "As you sow, so shall you reap".

It is also sad that some of the Mayor's most vociferous supporters ,especially those on the city payrolls, find gratification in berating and even threatening the Councilors.

Along similar lines; after lobbying for Councilors Rivers and Reid to attend the National Conference of Municipalities (?) I hope Councillor Rivers will impart what positive insight she has gained there with her fellow Councillors. Her chastising remarks to the Council were appropriated and deserved. However, her abrupt leaving the meeting bodes ill.

As long as three members of the Council continue to protect the Mayor and her actions instead of seeking compromise the City will continue to wallow in political disarray to the detriment of all.

  1. Our mayor is a bad trip down a rough road. She treats others like trash and expects others to treat her with respect. I don't she where this mayor has earned anything but derision and I'm glad she gets what she deserves from time to time. Maybe she'll learn to treat others as she wants to be treated.
