We have been informed that the road repaving project of Watchung Avenue between Seventh Street and Hillside.Avenue will be completed by either the last week in November or the first week in December at the latest.
One can only hope that this year there will not be a repeat of the fiasco of Kensington Avenue, that the weather stays dry and the temperatures rise above 40 Fahrenheit which is the lowest temperature at which asphalt can be poured. At any lower temperature the binding of the body to the subsurface is questionable. And at this low temperature the road may fail sooner than the average life span.
Of course permanency of the new pavement depends upon the aggregates used. Also there are various types designed for the load and wear the pavement will have to bear. Good engineering will determine what is best for the side streets or a main artery like Watchung Ave. without compromising life expectancy.
It is too late that we do not take into account the best time to do repavements or do not do proper maintenance of our existing roads.
