RACISM POTPOURRI 1

It has been hard to keep up with the news, watch the Yankees come back from a death facing 2 losses and win the division series from the team with the best record in baseball with 3 straight wins. At the same time keep Dawg happy and try to write a blog.

There is increasing controversy over the open flaunting of the national anthem and the flag with the “taking of the knee”.
It is one side of the issue of racism which I will address in another blog sooner or later

Once again the issue of the Confederate monuments and flag plus Columbus memorials is occupying many including local and state governments. The issue is absolutely one of racism; “white supremacy”.

The statues honoring Lee, Stonewall Jackson etc. were erected in two spurts; 1900 through the 20s and during the civil rights movements of the 50s and 60s. None before 1890s and the end of the carpetbaggers control of the South.

There should be no monuments honoring those who fought to preserve their economy based on slavery anywhere in our country. Nor should the flag of rebellion be flown since it is just a sign of white racism.

However to extend the same “burning of the books” philosophy to memorials of Washington, Jefferson and even Columbus is another matter.

Accepting the fact that that slavery was the normal state  of the world in their life time and from the beginning of history even as written in the Bible; these men where only owning the “stocks” of their time. They were not consciously being racists; there were white slaves and black slavers as well as Asians.

To deny Columbus his honor as an explorer because he was the first European except perhaps some Vikings to contact Native Americans who had their own slaves is wrong.

There is no history that Columbus was racist or owned slaves or enslaved the Indians he met; in fact Columbus may have been a “conservo”.

Nor did he bring small pox to decimate the natives;
That was the history of the Spanish conquerors and the Inquisitors.

On the other hand in exchange Columbus’s crews did bring Syphilis to Europe. And cause many deaths.

To destroy his statues or pictures depicting his arrival is in itself self-serving BS; a form of racism.
