VASSAR'S MAYPOLE

For Pat Turner; further research found this picture  of the 1912 Maypole  day. Also a story of the 1934 Day. It is too bad that silly traditions are discarded because they are "out of date"

SENIORS DANCE AROUND TRADITIONAL MAYPOLE Spring danced across the green of Vassar lawns on the evening of M.i\ Day, when two circles of pas-tel-clad Senior-. forgetting the weight of years and shadows of caps and gowns, wove gallant streamers about a tall maypole, to the tune of an <'Id English "Maying" song—and much laughter. The dances were in two groups, the smaller of which managed with apparent ease (and great hilarity) the intricacies of the traditional Ma\ Role dance, while the larger ring enthusiastically aided the pianist l>\ humming "Come Lasses and Lads"—and clapping an accompaniment, When the inner circle of weavers had wound the pole as tightly as mightbband as skillfully, since they avoided all the confusion and "tie ups" which usually finish a ma\ pole dance, they faced about to join the outer circle in singing the Senior .nni;. Finally, all too abruptl). the rings were broken, and led by their president, the Seniors ran hand in hand from the scene of their pageant.
