NEWTOWN CT.

In my 12/12/12 blog I wrote: "The spate of nationwide shootings in public places is one more argument for the restrictions on the sales of hand weapons to the public. Shotguns and rifles for licensed hunting would be OK if well controlled. Pistols and automatics have no place  in the public hands except under strict regulated conditions and  with periodic renewals. Certainly there should be no sale of assault weapons to other than law enforce3ment or military units."

On the 14th in Newtown Ct. in a K-4 school about 20 children ages 5 to 10; and 7 adults were gunned down by an individual armed with what seems to be at the time I write this several automatic rifles.

Once again weapons that should not be in the public domain end up in the hands of of a deranged individual. Each one of us should put pressure on our State legislatures and Congressmen to pass legislation making it a criminal offense to sell or posses such weapons. There should also be strict laws regarding  concealed  guns.

Since it will always be impossible to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals; the penalties for selling, transporting or possessing them should be extreme severe. We may not be able to prevent gun violence in the hands of a determined individual but sure as heck  can make it an arduous task to accomplish.

Since the elections are over perhaps the politicians will be sincere in what they do. We know that it will not be perfect but once we change our present mindset we can then tweak  the laws to still comply with the constitution and at the same time protect the people.

  1. Classically ignorant. Without major federal scrutiny an individual may not own an automatic weapon. A weapon that fires in semi-automatic mode, no matter how it looks to the uninformed, is simply a hunting rifle if it does not have an automatic function.

Let's concentrate on the people that actually commit these crimes - any child deemed dangerous, when put in a national database can be automatically monitored, and brought to light immediately with the slightest tweet or post on the Internet. Let's crack down on irresponsible parents and the uninformed. Let's make it so that you can't have a child without a permit...

I shudder to think of all the children the same age as the shooter that were killed to defend the rights of ignorant, foolish people in this country. Current culture is responsible for this tragedy.

  2. No automatic weapons...period. No one needs to pump 20 rounds into a deer. That takes away the NRA's hunters excuse.
Thoughts and prayers for the family and friends of the victims of Fridays horrific events.

How do you "deem a child dangerous"? What is the criteria?

Kids and teens act out, say and do stupid stuff. Maybe trace genes for those predisposed, test every child and keep the data on file for "surveillance." Would they be "on the list" for life?

Maybe bar those with a violent past or pre-disposed to violent genes from having children?

While we're at it, let's do away with anyone having kids with a birth defect, looking "funny" or not wonderfully attractive.

Maybe the school reports any kid who isn't popular, get's bullied, has bad grades, or gets into a fight. They could end up a bad apples and murder people, couldn't they?

ALL OF US can be violent, given the right situation.

"Normal" people can be pushed over the edge and do harm to themselves and others.

Sounds like Big Brother solution on steroids.

I like the idea of no childbearing without a permit. But how do you enforce it? Higher taxes for un-permitted child? Parent go to jail? Take them away? Abort?

If some crazy person wants to kill people -- which they have throughout time -- like the criminals, they'll find a way to do harm.

To go in and slaughter little kids -- who have no chance of fighting back -- a killer wouldn't need a gun, just a knife and start slitting necks. Or a well-trained person could just snap necks.

We are a violent species -- history proves our eager willingness to do harm to each other. This culture is no different than any culture in the past. Look at how much violence is done by people to children sexually by family members, senior abuse, spouse abuse.

The violence is there, everywhere around us, in many forms. In this instance it's the scale and severity that captures attention.

  4. In today's news Rupert Murdoch is featured as favoring gun control. Et tu, Rupert? It's about time. I wonder what difference that will make to the ranters on Murdoch-owned media--it is to hope.
