This past weekend was so perfect that it was more suitable to sitting outside and watching the world go by than deciding on a blog subject.

ReplyDeleteI'd say the first five books of the old testament, known as the Torah or to Christians as the Bible.

ReplyDeleteThe Book of the Dead in various forms, the eariest examples go back to at least 1700BC were a funerary texts not historical and contained payers and incantations etc. good try.
DeleteThank you Mike and Active; you are on the right track but Michael you need be more specific. The bible is a big tome and if you included the New Testament in any of its many versions that covers a lot of ground.
ReplyDeleteActive Citizen, the first five books which are the Hebrew Torah are mostly anecdotal and full of myths. Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers are focused more on religious issues along with applicable historic “facts”.
That perhaps makes the books of the Prophets starting with Joshua as the earliest true history books.
I am not a biblical scholar and confess to never have read the Old Testament in its entirety so I encourage any contrary answer.
Who is Herodotus, the "Father of History"? His "Histories" covered the Greco-Persian Wars and were written in the 5th Century BC.
ReplyDeleteIt is the opinion although some have questiones that Judges were written in the 6th Century BC. The events of the pre-monarchy period take place between the 14th and 11th Centuries BC. King david was about the end of the 11th Century.

I'll stick with "Bible" because we Christians consider the old and new to be part of the Bible and, in its entirety, it is a mostly historical record, from the first books to the last.

DeleteThe book of Job is Narrative History. Its author is unknown yet it is possible that Job himself wrote it. It is possible that Job is the oldest of any book of the Bible written approximately 2100-1800 B.C. Key personalities of this book include Job, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, Zophar the Naamathite, and Elihu the Buzite.
In Job, we see a man who God allows to be directly attacked by Satan. He is an example of faithfulness as he loses everything important to him yet remains faithful to God. Its purpose is to illustrate God’s sovereignty and faithfulness during a time of great suffering.
He does not complain and in the end is rewarded by God.
