I had remarked that if you could identify the location of all 4 pictures that you had cheated. A view of the Finnish city of Lampeenranta from a Karelian lake has no distinguishing features so it was an accidental and unfair posting. As a substitute #2b should be familiar to many. The location must be specific.
I now anticipate 75% identification.

A little history about the Karelian Lake area of Finland. This was the site of the "Winter War" of 1939-40 when a small Finnish army held off an invading Soviet Army 4 times as big and equipped with airplanes, tanks and the state of the art equipment. However like the Americans in the Bulge, the Russians were ill supplied with winter clothing etc. The Finns destroyed large numbers of Soviet troops and after one disaster the Soviets executed their commanding general and staff.
Ultimately the Finns who had received little help from the west were forced to negotiate a humiliating peace.

There were two results from this war; The poor performance of the Soviet troops convinced Hitler that Russia would be a push over, and Finland became a Nazi ally in the war against Russia.
