So much which most of us has lost
sight of has been happening around this world the past few days. Many are
focusing on the coming holiday season starting next week with Hanukkah and culminating
in New Year’s Day.
Incidentally the Books of the Maccabees
whose stories are the basis of Hanukkah
are not included in the canon Hebrew Bible which was probably written about 90
CE., after the destruction of the Second Temple although they are in the
Septuagint which became the official version of the Bible for the nascent
Christian Church.
The fact that Congress passed a two week spending
bill extension has problem probably been overlooked by the sexual abuse scandals which
have trapped over 100 males in the past
two months continues to mark the national scene. The latest is Rep. Trent Franks
the maverick Arizona Republican who announced that he will resign immediately
joining Democrat Senator Franken.
This week President Trump announced
that America will recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. There are questions
about his motivation. The announcement has
had mixed reaction from American Jewry receiving most support from the Orthodox
who at most represent about 10% of American Jews.
The most vociferous pushers for
such recognition come Hell or High Water have been the Evangelistic Christian
groups who are extremely strong in Alabama and supporters of Roy Moore a
reputed as an adult high school girl sex seeker.
Many feel that
if the Black population in Alabama turn out to vote, a rarity, Moore will be
defeated.
Other happenings is the
killing of at least Peace Workers in Africa, and In India the Supreme
Court at the urging of her parents has annulled the marriage to a Muslim of a
Hindu woman who voluntarily converted to Islam. When a government is by one religion
personal rights do not count.
