Last night's town meeting lacked any fireworks. In fact there was an unusual reluctance for people to come to mike. Most public concerns focused on the roads, the PMUA, economic redevelopment, and the emergency health care situation; specifically on the lack of ambulances.
The most important moment was at the onset when Council President introduce the new Public Information Officer,Terry West and Public Safety Director Hellwig's report.
Hellwig noted that after an almost 6 months delay do to PSE&G's reluctance to place the equipment on their power poles PSE&G had " donated"(?) 21 stand alone new poles. He also noted that work was going on with the surveillance cameras system and when it will be operating there is plans for tie ins with the camera at the RR stations, the school system etc.The system will be monitored at a facility in Police Hdqrs.
Hellwig also announced the the department was hiring 10 new policemen, "at no increase in the salary line. His explanation was the at the department was 15 "men" below authorized.
I may post again by early afternoon.
