ON THE ROAD TO JUSTICE

Before I read Thursday's news papers I am still uncertain which of the three big stories should be the focus of today's blog. Should it be (1)the amazing appointment of Dan Williamson as CEO of PMUA; and event that could only take Place in OZ, or (2) Santorum's dropping out of the race for the GOP nomination, or (3) the belated justified indictment of Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin.

I chose the third one because it is representative of the Constitution legal process not the verbal lynching demanded by those who immediately accused the local authorities of condoning a WHITE racist hate crime. This was the subject of my 3/24/2012 blog TRAYVON MARTIN.
I think the commentaries are most important.

Yes the voice of the people probably had the impact on the choosing of the Special Prosecutor who is white. It is possible that the lack of an immediate arrest for murder while the Police Chief with the approval of the City Administrator investigated if the killing occurred in circumstances covered by a horrendous Florida law. Both officials are African-American.

Zimmerman himself has a mixed racial parentage. Never the less, the hue and cry was that this was a White Hate Crime.

This was a ready made stage for Plainfield's friend Rev. Al Sharpton a most effective voice against those who would condone biased racial crimes. Unfortunately Sharpton seizes an opportunity without always ascertaining the true facts as he did in the Tawana Brawley case where he never apologized for ruining the life of a white police officer.

However without the Public outrage that resulted in the ultimate arrest of Zimmerman who will now be tried before a jury on a 2nd degree murder charge; Zimmerman may have gone unpunished. Florida law permits the killing of an other if one thinks his life is in danger.

The problem is that the law can justify legal murder. That law is as much a criminal as Zimmerman may be judged by trial. It may still be the basis for a successful legal defence for Zimmerman In such a case the Federal Government may and probably will try and convict him for depriving Martin of his Civil Rights. Let us hope it does not have to go that route.

There are many safeguards for individual rights in our Constitution. It is up to all of us to be sure that they are never abrogated no matter what the circumstances. It is most important that we do not operate as a mob and prosecute those mob leaders who take the law into their hands.
