Instead of posting  my own material today it always nice to become a shill for someone I admire because of her inventiveness and willingness to try something new.

Such a person is Olive Lynch and this is from her email newsletter.

Hi everyone!

Right now is an exciting time.

1.       We are an official, licensed Class C RD&D food waste recycling facility!  We are the 2^nd in the state.  We have all the required permits in place.  I had my final meeting with the DEP yesterday.   As we move through the phases of our RD&D project, they will work with us on additional permits we’ll need.  The DEP has been wonderful to work with, very supportive and interested in what we are doing. 

2.       We have our first commercial customers – two restaurants.  We are talking with an independent ShopRite right about taking their produce daily.  Our sales team is out talking to small restaurants to large chains, and so far the majority of businesses have expressed interest.  We estimate by recycling food, a business can save 10-20% on their waste cost. 

In our model:

a.       We will leave 32 gallon container(s) at the customer’s site. 

b.      When we pick up, we leave a clean container(s). 

c.       We charge by the pound based on pickup volume and will be able to give weekly and monthly reports.  Businesses can track what is being thrown out, as well as provide data to the township for State recycling credits.  No other hauler/recycler offers this kind of information.

d.      We also track non-food waste in the containers.  The first month we’ll provide feedback so employees can be trained. 

So far, we’ve had positive feedback.  I anticipate we’re going to grow quickly.

3.       We’re going to launch our Dunellen residential pilot September 16.   In the same week, we’ll start taking the horses to Woodbridge, to start to sign people up for the residential pilot there.

4.       We’ve had initial discussions with the Alexander School in Morristown about a food waste recycling pilot.  We’ve put together a class project outline for the kids to go with the recycling pilot.  Our hope is while we do the school pilot, we concurrently do a residential pilot in the surrounding area, with the kids participating.

5.       Right now we have @200,000 BSF larvae eating away.  We feed them about 30 lbs of food a day.  We’re getting the fly cage “winterized”, so we can keep it 85 degrees F this winter.

6.       The food waste the BSF larvae can’t eat will be taken to the other NJ food waste recycler Ag Choice.  We have a contract in place with them, and they’ve been supportive and welcoming.

7.       We have a number of events scheduled this month:

a.       PMUA Environmental Fair, 9/7 from 11-3pm.  I hope to get Plainfielders signed up for a food waste pilot

b.      Dunellen Street Fair, 9/8 from 10-5pm.  We hope to get more Dunellen residents signed up for our pilot

c.       Morristown Gran Fondo, 9/8 from 8am-8pm.  We’re doing the food waste recycling for this event.  We’re working with Sustainable Morristown.  Here’s a story written about it:

d.      Officials from the town of Woodbridge are visiting our facility on 9/11.  We will work out the details of the neighborhood for the Woodbridge pilot.

e.      We are having an open house, Saturday, September 14 from 2-4pm.  We’ll give a tour of the facility, show how we care for the larvae and horses.  Residential pilot participants will get their bucket and we’ll discuss the pilot.

8.       I’ve created a blog:  http://grnwt.blogspot.com/  Here I’ll post about our activities, as well as use it as a tool to get feedback from residential pilot participants.

It’s been a long road to get to this point, but it’s been worth it.  Now the fun begins!  J
