THE SYRIA CRISIS

The easiest way to write a blog is to fill it with quotes; and I propose to do so today.

If we think that we are going to avoid any consequences from aborting any action against Syria we are way off base.

Yes Kerry and his Russian counterpart are in Paris “talking” about how to implement Putin’s proposal regarding Syria’s surrendering their chemical weapons.

On 9/11 I posted “Meanwhile, let us see if we can trust the United Nations, Assad, and Russia to see that those terrible stockpiles of inhuman weapons are destroyed. Want to bet?”.

From CNN today:” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad demanded Thursday that the United States call off any potential strike on Syrian government forces before he gives up his large chemical weapons arsenal."This bilateral process is based, first of all, on the United States stopping its policy of threatening Syria," he said.”

And not only has Russia threatened to block any Security Council Resolution that had any mention of action against Syria but yesterday the New York Times published a long op-ed by Putin in which he not only stated that any unilateral action by the US would mean the end of The United Nations.  

As reported by CNN “Russian President Vladimir Putin injected himself into the American debate with an opinion piece first published late Wednesday on the New York Times website that argued against U.S. military intervention in Syria and implicitly criticized Obama.”

On 9/9 I wrote “Today, with the Syrian chemical issue we may be repeating the mistakes that lead to WWII. If nothing is done to show that we will not tolerate such atrocities against innocent civilians there is a great possibility that there will be an increasing flaunting by North Korea and Iran. “

Last night’s news noted that there was indications that North Korea had reactivated its nuclear reactor: The Guardian “Satellite imagery shows reactor capable of producing plutonium for weapons is likely to be operating, says US research institute.”

It is unfortunate that our President drew a redline in the sand if we are not going to back him up. Yes there is danger that a military strike, which in its self will not be decisive, will result in a spread of the conflict.

I believe the danger of that happening is much less than North Korea and Iran now starting a reckless aggressive adventure. History indicates that will happen.

I did write: “However it is unlikely that the leaders of those powers would initiate warlike action against any of the Western nations over a spanking of Syria. A threat to Russia or China leaders’ own power control is the only trigger that would lead them to risk a war. (9/10 THERE IS AN OUT).”

One can never be sure of despot’s actions but I feel the above is true.
