Sunday's Courier Plainfield story was about HERITAGE CHORUS suspending its operations due to financial problems. Once again one of Plainfield's rare jewels will vanish because of lack of public support. I do have a question, are the chorus' and the foundation's books audited for perhaps better use of funds?
Although the chorus is not an athletic activity it is another important and successful youth activity that would keep youngsters off "the street". Somehow there must e a revision of "Recreations" role and adequate funding must be found to support this and other activities that I have alluded to in previous post. They are all important weapons in the fight against gangs.
Renata's blog yesterday noted that the Washington and Emerson School Gyms will be open Thursday evening during August. This is welcomed as a very small step in the right direction in the crime counter offensive. We need 7 nights a week. The BOE merits a few brownie points for the effort.
The answer is of course money. Costs of course included insurances and staffing. The staff problem can be alleviated in part by the greater use of civic minded volunteers. Supervisory personnel must be city/school employees and willing to share responsibilities with the public.
An attitude change in Administration and various departments is essential.
On the subject of the BOE, Maria has noted that the last minutes that have e=been approved was in February. All minutes up to the installation of the present board remain unofficial, however they must be kept and obtainable although never accepted. The present board can not approve or reject minutes from meetings that occurred under the auspices of another board.
If the present board is not acting on the minutes of its meetings it too is being irresponsible.Minutes should be available for acceptance or correction at the next meeting or rarely at a subsequent early meeting. At best minutes are subject to editing, but alterations can not be permitted unless the matter is fresh in the membership's minds.

Hunt and peck has it faults. Speech transcribing does not seem to be the answer. Enjoying a second career as a self appointed advocate for the public vz local government excesses.
TRACKER
Point of Clarity - this is not a BOE initiative but rather a group of Plainfield citizens who have come together to volunteer their time to provide alternatives to the children in this community. It includes city government, parents, teachers, churches, law enforcement and yes some board members too.

Thank you Renata for the information. I was trying to give the BOE some credit for positive action. I believe that I have noted in the past that there has to be public initiative and official cooperation. One question; Since this is school property,was approval of the BOA needed? Also ,and you would know the answer, does the PSS liability insurances cover this activity? I wish that this could at least be 5/7 instead of only once a week for 4 weeks.
ReplyDeleteAs you have stated finances would not allow for 5-7 during the summer, but of course there are after school programs during the school year that are budgeted for.
ReplyDeleteIn so much that this are designated as "community" schools BOE approval for use is not warranted.
Doc, the current Board can and should deal with "old" minutes. The BOE is an ongoing body even when some of the membership changes. In this case there are three "new" members (out of nine)--there is continuity and the minutes must be dealt with.
ReplyDeleteThe HERITAGE chorus might be able to rehearse at either Washington or Emerson school--this is certainly something that should be explored. It's an invaluable resource for our young people and for our city.
Washington School has had open gym hours for years. This is not a new initiative of the BOE or any other group. It is great that they are continuing a practice that is good for the community, but to give them credit for beginning it is laughable. I will be the first to stand up an applaud this BOE when it comes up with anything new and/or innovative. In the meantime, they are just shuffling the deck and taking credit for a bunch of good things that were already in place.
ReplyDeleteWhat in heavens name does our recreation director do? Shouldn't Dave Wynn be trying to find ways to have these kids occupied? What does he do?
ReplyDeleteFor the record folks we were and are dealing with the minutes. We have not had a enough affirmative votes to approve those including and prior to 5/4 do to Board members during that timeframe not being present at the meeting.
ReplyDeleteAs stated publically the minutes although not approved will stand as the official record.
And for the "DUDE" getting all hyper about Washington Open Gym-- They are not open EVERY DAY. This is a Good thing...a GOOD Community Partnership THING. The BOE has TAKEN no credit for this it was ascribe to them for which I quickly and clearly corrected. So calm down. I look forward to your applause in the coming months.
