WING AND A PRAYER

Still working on "the prayer blog" . However other priorities delay finalizing my thoughts. Instead before I turn to just potpourri a phrase "on a wing and a prayer" struck a chord. No prayers today and I am winging it.

"Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer" has two roots in ancient history; better known as WWII. Ancient? How many have any recollection of those times?

The first use was for a 1944 movie about an aircraft carrier on a decoy mission in the Pacific at a time when things were black there. The more popular association was in a song supposed inspired by a based in Burma "Flying Tiger" incident but later referenced to the Bombers in Europe. The song: coming in on a wing and a prayer ... You can skip the ad in the video but the actors are fun.

Reading today's Star Ledger's report on High School graduation rates where the 2010 and 2011 rates are compared there is an obvious misleading fact that accounts for the 20% drop at Plainfield High. This is a matter of apples and oranges since the ground rules where changed. However in comparison with the rest of the County except Elizabeth; Plainfield's 70% rate is disturbing.

If the printed figures are right there were no graduates from BOAACD in 2011 although 100% of the senior class graduated in 2010. That,I am sure can be reasonably explained.Correction: The graduation rate from BOAACD in 2011 was 30.91%; the drop from 100 %to 0 rate was atrtibuted to the Union Couunty Magnet High. Was that school closed?

More depressing news is in today's Plaintalker II blog regarding the Budget Hearings related to the Senior Citizen's Center. Why we are even in the process of picking a Arbitrator over the "finishing charges" submitted by the builder is questionable. especially since it seems that in 2010 the Corporation Counsel stated in answering a question about those charges that it was in arbitration at that time. In view of the recent PMUA arbitration procedure it seems that our administration may have a different view point than a commonly accepted one.

Also, if the City is denied use of the so called Veterans Center portion, are we paying fees on that part of the building? Is there documentation spelling out the City's rights as a condo owner?

To much opaqueness instead of transparency by the elected bodies in the City; both Administration and BOE.

  1. It is so tragic. Our children aren't learning, our dysfunctional government is selling us down the river. We taxpayers are footing the bill for this nonsense.

I always thought a contract was a contract and once signed the parties are committed to it. Evidently all of the negotiation about the Senior Citizen and Veterans centers were "word of mouth" not a signed contract?

  2. Thank you for raising the concerns about the Senior/Veterans Center situation. I hope this will help to resolve the issue as a priority. I don't understand why the sales office can't move into one of the available condos and free up the Veteran's space for Veterans to use.

I agree we have to do more for the children in Plainfield which will help everyone in our city. Education is key to life success.
