The Parthenon

The Parthenon was built in the 5th Century BC, and stood intact until about 1460 when the Ottomans occupied Athens and converted it into as mosque and added a minaret. In 1687 when the Venetians were bombarding Athens, munitions dump inside the building exploded permanently damaging it. Today it is threatened by the pollution inherent in a modern city.

Two views of the building, and one of the final stages of the climb to the Acropolis.
